Dropping this under a read more because I'm going to try and address as many of your questions as possible. You said you wanted the nitty gritty details so I'm rambling here and not cutting anything out even though it's getting concerningly long.
Between my classes, volunteer work, and fanfiction I spend way too much time writing. So in a week I might have 4 or more papers of varying lengths for classes, a 600-1,000 word news article, and anywhere between 300 and 3,000+ words worth of fic writing. Then sometimes I also go to a local library for a writing group that meets once a month and end up with 4 or more pages of prose.
I don't normally make any physical notes or plans with the exception of that one longfic for an AU that I've been trying to work on for the past... 3-4 months now? I've got a Scrivener project file with a list of characters, places, and random notes on stuff. It's not super coherent, more like a reference so that I don't lose my mind trying to force like 10 different versions of reality to combine into one setting.
Getting from plot bunny/prompt to an actual fleshed-out idea is really easy for oneshots and harder than it sounds for longfics. With oneshots, I normally just think about it. For example, with Whumptober prompts I'll cross off anything that's already been done by someone else unless it's a different interpretation of the same thing. I just keep spitballing until I land on something. Then I work out what the beginning, middle, and end need to be to get my desired outcome. For longfics, uh... it's more of a specific theme or setting and then I plan chapter-by-chapter. I mostly write oneshots so I don't have a lot of practice with longfics.
Normally when I'm sitting down to write I already know who is going to be involved and why. (With the exception of Twilight who manages to sneak into things uninvited on a regular basis.) I make that kind of decision based on what I think would push a character to do something specific. If they don't fit what I need, I move on to someone else or think about how they'd react in the situation. That said, I don't really plan out interactions ahead of time so I end up taking things paragraph by paragraph.
I'm incredibly inconsistent, so I've used lots of programs. I have written and proofed entire fics in everything from online word counters to MS Word. For a while I used one Google Document for everything. I've written in my phone's notes app and directly into the Ao3 website. StimuWrite has been super helpful. Right now I'm trying to make an effort to have a copy of each fic downloaded on my computer instead of throwing them into the internet like I have been.
TL;DR: this is what my brain is like when I'm writing:
I'm a philosophy major. If I wasn't spending all my free time doing mental calculations and logic for fics, I'd be a conspiracy theorist.
OK, so I was inspired and now I wanna start a bigger conversation and I wanna know: fic writers, comic makers, au creators, etc. how do you do it? How do you go from plot bunny or story idea to completed chapters/story/comic update? What's your process? What programs do you use? Do you draft stuff? Outline? Storyboard? Do you chart or sketch? How do you settle on characters and characterizations? How do you plot (or do you)? I wanna know all the nitty gritty details. It's just so interesting because everyone does it so differently.

Lila Rossi: I’d Say She’s a Good Villain, but Then I’d Be Lying (300 Follower Special)
Deception and cunning are easily two of the most important traits an antagonist could have. It shows that even if they don't have the strength to overcome obstacles, their wit is more than enough. This kind of trait is why characters like Lex Luthor, David Xanatos, and Princess Azula are so beloved, simply because of how intelligent they can be as villains and pose a real threat to the heroes.
It's clear that the Miraculous Ladybug writers want Lila to be seen as this, but the writing seriously fails to back that claim up.
Easily one of the most controversial characters in Miraculous Ladybug is Lila, mainly for the writing surrounding her. But there was a time where she was actually more of an ambiguous character, mainly for the lack of screentime she had until Season 3. But unfortunately, the more appearances she's had have painted a very poor portrait of an antagonist.
Lila's Tragic and Sympathetic Motivation for Hating Ladybug
Lila's first appearance was at the tail end of Season 1, “Volpina”. She was a new transfer student from Italy, and quickly made friends with a lot of her classmates for the lies she told, including being friends with Ladybug (which Alya blindly believed without doing any research like any excellent journalist). But because of how close she was getting to Adrien, Marinette, in a rare act of selfishness, transforms into Ladybug just to chew out Lila for lying about knowing her, humiliating her in front of Adrien. And this is the only motivation we get for what Lila does afterwards.
I'm not saying that it's wrong for Lila to get upset at Ladybug for doing this, and I like the moment of weakness Marinette has, but this is literally the only explanation we get for Lila deciding to side with Hawkmoth, a literal terrorist. As much as I hated the way the arc turned out, I could still understand Chloe siding with Hawkmoth, as it was clear that Hawkmoth was manipulating her and taking advantage of her ego. Lila? Ladybug's mean to her one time, and that inspires her to conspire with a complete stranger who brainwashes people to attack the city, which endangers innocent people and causes God knows how much in collateral damage if not for Miraculous Ladybug fixing everything.
I just don't get how a single negative interaction with someone is enough to conspire with a literal supervillain. Even in Season 3, when Marinette and Lila truly became enemies, it was because she risked exposing all the lies she told, which could damage her reputation. Sure, it's petty, but it makes sense for Lila to want to keep up the illusion. If she was simply an antagonist to Marinette in her civilian life like Chloe was before “Miracle Queen” , I'd be fine with that, but the writers clearly want her to be seen as on the same level of evil as Hawkmoth. I'll get into why that doesn't work later on.
Why Lila is an Excellent Liar
In my Master Fu analysis, I had pointed out that despite all the flaws he had, the narrative insisted on portraying him as an incredibly wise mentor. The same problem applies for Lila as well. We're supposed to see Lila as an expert manipulator and liar, but her lies are insultingly obvious. She always claims to be friends with celebrities and does all these awesome things, and in an age where we can have almost any question answered thanks to the internet, nobody ever stops to question her.
It's even more frustrating when you hear Lila talk about saving Jagged Stone's cat, when Jagged Stone is established to be very fond of Marinette (evidentially more than his own daughter), and nobody ever points that out. I think if Lila's lies were more stories about her travels around the world than outright lies about real people, it could have worked. It'd still be hard to believe, but it's something.
But this is a problem with writing shows aimed at children. As much as we hate writers who need to spell out things to kids, sometimes, they just don't understand some of the media they consume. Seriously, I never got this joke in SpongeBob as a kid, and I can't believe Nickelodeon actually approved this.
youtube
So the dilemma when writing a show with children in mind is finding that sweet spot between assuming your audience can figure it out, but not being too vague in your details. It's even harder when you need to find a way to convey the fact that someone is lying without being too obvious. Unfortunately, the show clearly fails to do that
Okay, this is going to sound like an incredibly weird thing to cite, and I only know about it because I used to know someone who was a huge fan of the franchise, but the movie Monster High: Friday Night Frights does a better job of subtly explaining to the audience that a character is lying. Please, just hear me out.
The movie follows the main characters competing in their high school's roller derby for the season after everyone on the usual team gets injured, and the championship match is against another school whose team tends to cheat to win matches. How they manage to do this without getting caught is anyone's guess. While the main characters are practicing, their coach, Clawd, notices a spy for the enemy team taking video of them to study their moves. In response, he calls over one of the athletes, Operetta, to chew her out for her showboating attitude. In reality, he's alerting her to the spy. Only using facial expressions, he clues her, and by extension, the audience, in on the fact that they know what the opposing team is trying to do.
This soon leads to Operetta pretending to tell the enemy team about their secret plan for the championship match, which was really an attempt to outsmart them to gain the advantage in the final stretch. The brilliance of this is how the audience is informed of this with no dialogue, and there's no scene afterwards spelling it out for those who don't get it. It manages to convey deception without being too obvious that Clawd and Operetta are being deceitful.
I think if there were more subtle hints to show the audience Lila was lying, she would be seen in a better light. As it is, Lila's lies are just pathetic, and it's ridiculous that everyone believes her. Which leads me to...
Lila, the Master Manipulator
I once read a Star Trek: Voyager fanfic that poked fun at the series by claiming that the reason a lot of the dumber episodes like “Threshold” and “Twisted” happened was because one of the crew members was an alien who unintentionally produced mood altering pheromones, with Captain Janeway actually realizing they were all high because of said pheromones, while two of the unaffected crew members were wondering what the hell they were doing before they found out the cause. Why do I bring this up? Sometimes, it feels like Lila is an unintentional parallel to the alien in that story.
Like so many characters, it's clear the show desperately wants the audience to view Lila in a certain way, but her actions do very little to actually back up that claim. When she's not using lies to tell stories about so many famous people she knows like her uncle who works for Nintendo, Lila is using strategies to manipulate everyone that are so obviously deceptive, the Thermians could pick up on them. Everyone and their mother knows how ridiculous a lot of what Lila does in episodes like “Chameleon” and “Ladybug” are, and I've talked about them before, so I'll try to be quick.
First off, as someone who had access to accommodations through high school and has had assistance in college so far, there is no way in hell that Ms. Bustier should take Lila's tinnitus at face value in “Chameleon”. If a student has a disability that could interfere with the education process, physical or developmental, not only does the school have to evaluate their performance, and determine if they're eligible for an Individualized Education Program, or IEP, but her teachers would have to be notified in the first place. As her primary educator, Ms. Bustier would be part of the team to oversee Lila's IEP and determine what accommodations she needs to help her learn better with her tinnitus and arthritis. But because the writers don't know what Google is, they just ignore it, assume that Lila can just say she has a disability, and have everyone believe it. Even when Eric Cartman pretended to be disabled to compete in the Special Olympics, he put in more effort to look the part, even if he looked like a caricature.
Then there's the fact that that in “Chameleon”, everyone just believes Lila when she says Marinette stole her grandmother's necklace when not only is said necklace from the Agreste line of jewelry, but Alya, who is Rena Rouge, can't pick up on the fact that it's a fake. All she does to justify these lies is come up with a sob story about how nobody believes her, yet nobody ever tries to defend Marinette except Alya one time, and it was after she got expelled.
Or what about in “Oni-Chan”, where Lila thinks having Kagami kill Ladybug while claiming she'll back away from Adrien is a good idea? Let's say Oni-Chan does kill Ladybug or at least take away her Miraculous, what then? We know Lila wouldn't go through with this promise, and as soon as Kagami sees her harassing Adrien, she'll be ripe for akumatization again. Overall, not a great plan.
And yet somehow, this last example is what made her worthy enough to become one of Hawkmoth's most trusted agents. I'm just going to say it: Lila is not a good fit for the power of illusion. Whenever she's Volpina or Chameleon, she always goes out of her way to make a big show instead of being subtle with her deceptions. “Chameleon” is the worst offender, as even though Lila gets the power to shapeshift into someone else, instead of being discreet and cornering people into kissing them and gaining their appearance, she just runs around to get Ladybug's attention instead of being subtle. Even Felix had the bright idea to pretend to be Adrien to catch Ladybug off guard. How do you lose to something that happened in “Felix”?
Despite all of these screw-ups, we're still supposed to see her as this master of deception worthy of allying with Hawkmoth in both his supervillain and civilian form, when really, she's a terrible liar on the schoolyard and on the battlefield.
Why Lila is an Important Character
In the grand scheme of things, Lila just isn't as important of a character that the show loves to parade her around as. She's nothing more than a plot device used to raise the stakes in an episode, given how much reality seems to bend over just to accommodate for her lies. Even when the show alludes to her being part of bigger things, like her deal with Adrien, or her rivalry with Marinette, they don't even go anywhere.
She just feels pointless when you remember Astruc's brilliant idea to force Chloe into being the final Akuma for the season while Lila isn't even mentioned once. She only really makes appearances whenever the writers feel like it, which is why it’s hard to take her seriously. Why should I take this character seriously as a threat if the writers refuse to take her seriously as a threat? Why build Lila up as a big threat and not give her a major role in the finale? Why even include her in the show in the first place when you could show Chloe being more manipulative to fill in the plots Lila plays a big part in?
As of the time I am writing this analysis, four episodes of Season 4 have aired, three of them have been about lies or deception, and Lila hasn't been mentioned at all. It honestly seems like she won't appear unless the writers need a easy way to drive up the conflict, so they can justify it by saying that Lila's “superpower” of lying is more powerful than the common sense of everyone else.
I'm sorry this post was shorter than the last one, but compared to Master Fu, there's not that much to say about Lila that I haven't already said. Even the show barely gives her any attention, so it's hard for me to really find a lot to talk about.

EVERYONE has something important to contribute to our understanding of pain. Did you know that western medicine measures pain with a simple visual scale? Western medicine has no technology that can measure pain because pain is purely experiential. It cannot be located in the body. It is in the mind. Sometimes pain is associated with inflammation or tissue damage, but often it is not. So pain is measured purely by the mind. Technology has not progressed beyond this visual analog scale! In our MYT trainings, we learn how to talk about pain and ask questions about pain in a way that can reveal its deeper roots and hopefully transform it’s branches and fruits.. Every person that I talk to expands my understanding of my own pain. The healing really does go both ways. Photo by @montystilson . Coaching service for women is very popular in the Big Apple. New York dating professionals have been using these services for years. However, the trend has exploded in recent years and is now catching on elsewhere in the country and even the globe. What makes the top 5 NJ matchmakers attractive to new clients? Let's take a look.
An a dating coach can be helpful to all types of people. For instance, singles can benefit from using a coach if they are single and simply want to find love on their own. Couples can use a dating coach if they feel stuck or unhappy in their current love life and are looking to move on. Even those who have been happily married for decades can benefit from having a good relationship with a coach because they may be feeling confused about what's going on in their marriage.
Facety Mentoring.
Good matchmaking coaches will also allow you to use online dating software that will help you find matches. Many of these software programs are specifically made for online dating. They can put you in touch with singles who have similar interests and goals as you do. Your personal information won't be passed along to anyone else, which makes it safe for singles-even those who choose to keep their distance from each other-to use your online dating features.
It's not that I'm trying to downplay the importance of a good NJ online dating coach. The problem is many women set out to meet someone in hopes of finding Mr. or Ms. Right and don't seem to know how to do so. The first thing I suggest them to do is invest the time to get educated on how to be a good pick up artist. NJ dating coaches have a lot to offer, but there's a critical difference between learning an art and mastering it.
The Ew Team Executive Training Group.
Dating has a lot of rules and a lot of different elements. A dating coach who only knows one or two of those things can't do a very good job. So it's imperative you find a coach who's a matchmaker at the same time. I say this because you can't expect just one type of coaching from a dating coach, you need to be able to learn about matchmaking from multiple coaches. That's what will make you more effective as a matchmaker, which makes you a better coach.

How can the right kind of farming protect our soils and our climate? Find out in Carbon Cowboys. © 2020, carbon nation. Photo by Peter Byck
Peter Byck is a Professor of Practice at Arizona State University, in both the School of Sustainability and the Cronkite School of Journalism. He is the director, producer and writer of carbon nation. He is currently helping to lead a $6.3 million research project focused on Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing; collaborating with 20 scientists and 10 farmers, focused on soil health and soil carbon storage; microbial, bug and bird biodiversity; water cycling and much more. Byck has currently completed carbon cowboys, a feature-length documentary (in ten parts) focused on regenerative grazing: www.carboncowboys.org and is in production on a long-form documentary on the AMP grazing research project.
The trailer for carbon cowboys premiered during the 2020 Earth Optimism Digital Summit during which Byck also shared a bit more about the film as a speaker for a ‘Telling the Story’ session. Ahead of the premiere of carbon cowboys, Earth Optimism Communications lead Cat Kutz chatted with him to learn more about the regenerative farming the film highlights and how it can shift the way we think about food, climate and the future of farming.
The first question that I had for you is hopefully an interesting one. If you were to tell us about the film in just a tweet, How would you describe it? So that’s less than 280 characters…
I would say meet the American farmers who are regenerating their soils and discovering solutions to climate, food security and water security. While finally making money growing us healthy food.
Alberta, Canada © 2020, carbon nation. Photo by Peter Byck
That’s perfect. It’s engaging and it definitely sets people up for something that they’d want to learn more about. I like that. Now, can you explain soil carbon storage and how this impacts agriculture?
Sure. Organic matter, the things that were once alive and have now died in the soil, are built of carbon – old microbes, old roots. And when you have a system that has a lot of microbes and a lot of roots and those things die, they actually create the structure for the soil, besides all the mineral material. And that structure actually has air in it and it’s squishy like a sponge. The carbon within those dead microbes and in those dead roots is very durable and lasts for decades or centuries.
And so that carbon was taken out of the atmosphere through photosynthesis from the leaves of the plant. The plant then burps out oxygen, keeps the carbon, mixes the carbon with water and creates these sugars that then go down through the plant’s roots and feeds the microbes. And so when you have a system that has a lot of different plants, it ends up having a lot of different microbes in the soil. Biodiversity above ground equals biodiversity below ground, and all of that material as it dies off, becomes actual soil structure and then that soil then becomes the home for the next round of life.
youtube
The dead stuff is still food for the plants and that structure actually is like a sponge, so healthy soil is not compacted, it’s absorbent. So if you have a system with great plant cover and great healthy soil structure, when you get eight inches of rain in a day it all soaks into that farm, but across the fence, they are in flood conditions. Where the next day that farmer can be out in the field working, across the fence they’re out for two weeks with that eight-inch unusual rainfall that we’re getting more and more of.
But what’s also amazing about that spongy quality of the soil that’s made up of so much former life and full of carbon, is that it’s got so much surface area that it actually holds water longer so the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly. So in drought conditions, again, because the plants are covering the soil, the soil doesn’t overheat and the overheating doesn’t cause evapotranspiration beyond what normally happens to the plants. You’ve got the soil that’s holding onto water longer, so on the side of the fence where the farmers focused on soil health, they’re growing forage for their animals, a month or months longer than their neighbor in the drought. The neighbor has to go buy hay or sell their animals, while this farmer is still growing food. And so there is a huge economic benefit to having healthy soil.
The more carbon in the soil, the more plants and more photosynthesis and more drawing down of the CO2 from the atmosphere. The more you’re putting that carbon into that soil system, it’s still going to cycle. It’s still going to get back out into the atmosphere. But it’s going to take decades and centuries, rather than when you plow it – that’s the immediate release of carbon from the soil that binds with the oxygen, you’ve got CO2 building up, leading to climate change. So right now, there’s just a heck of a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere and that carbon – they think like a fifth or more of the carbon that’s up in the atmosphere right now – came from the soil systems.
And so let’s get that carbon back in a place where it’s part of a very healthy cycle as opposed to where it is right now, in the atmosphere – where it’s part of a cycle, but it’s a warming cycle beyond what we have grown accustomed to. We have coastal cities, we’d like to keep them.
So we’re talking about farmer resiliency and right now in the current global crisis, we’re seeing a huge effect on them because of the food waste and other issues that are rising from the pandemic. Does regenerative farming help protect them from these effects?
I think you’re seeing a lot of that food waste in really bad situations. It’s happening in the meatpacking industry, but I don’t think you’re seeing that from the regenerative farming community. I think you’re seeing that from the industrial farming community.
The farmers that I know of that sell directly to customers and some farmers in our films their sales are up between 300 and 1,000% They’re selling out.
There are places that I ordered from online that are sold out of meats where they were never sold out of these things. And so, so they’re actually much stronger right now – the ones who are either already selling to customers or pivoted to selling to customers. And so I think this is a pretty amazing sign that focusing on soil health is actually a great business plan.
Allen Williams of Starkville, MS © 2020, carbon nation. Photo by Peter Byck
I have one farmer who has a farm store and he said he’s never seen lines out the door before — he’s had lines out the door. And I’m sure he’s keeping everyone six feet away from each other.
But you know, people had to pivot… One of the farmers in our film, Allen Williams, he has a company called Joyce farms. He’s part of that company, and overnight, they lost 75% of the business selling meat produced in a regenerative way to Disney. So all those cruises, Disney World, all that stuff just went away overnight and they pivoted and they started having these parking lots. Sales selling out all over the southeast.
Wow. It’s almost as if people are kind of relearning how to get good quality food as a result of the pandemic. A lot of the public is gaining this awareness by seeing firsthand how important farming is… so do you think that this is a climate solution and these kinds of initiatives are going to become more bipartisan as time goes on?
I would hope so. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want soil health. But there’s a whole lot of farming going on in the country right now that doesn’t lead to soil health. And so how do you change that and how do you change that quickly? That’s, that’s the stuff that I think about and collaborate with people about and plan. Try to come up with more game plans and pilot programs. That’s, that’s sort of where my focus is right now. But I think people trust nature. I know people trust nature. And when you get into a stressful situation, you want to, you want to go to what you know works. And these farmers are working with nature and their customers are coming to them.
When I was on the road with carbon nation, I mean, one guy said, because he heard I was making a film about solutions to climate change, he said to me, ‘You and I are going to disagree about everything.’ And then we dug into it, and we agreed on about 70% of how we’d run the country. That blew us both away. We realized that there’s a lot more common ground than any newscast will tell you. Back then I was looking at solar and geothermal and energy efficiency and the reasons that the Department of Defense should be concerned about climate change and national security and all those things.
But then when I started working specifically on soil and healthy soil and rejuvenating soil and seeing what was happening with me and the farmers that I was meeting; we were getting along, in total agreement about soil heath. And we definitely have different politics. Then I realized that the common ground… is the ground. I’ve always been hunting for where people already are in agreement. It’s just they haven’t had the opportunity or taken the time or broken through the noise to find out that there is an agreement, and people agree about healthy soils.
We’re working on helping more and more people rejuvenate their soils. It’s so important, it touches so many issues. It’s what the Smithsonian always talks about – it’s what Earth Optimism is all about.
Yes! And definitely sharing the solutions… We like to think that the more you share solutions, the more solutions then come from that. It’s like the greatest aggregator of positive change is being able to share your story.
Exactly, and farmers will learn from our films. That would be a home run for us if it’s already happened. Some of the parts of our documentary, called paddocks, have been in festivals as standalone short films and farmers have called us to ask how they can do this and can we hook them up.
So we’re hoping this big film will inspire more of that, and wouldn’t it be amazing if a lot of farmers wanted to learn about this because they saw it’s just good business?
Are there any barriers that you have to overcome to get farmers to watch your films particularly because of the climate change element?
Our films aren’t climate-focused, they’re farmer-focused. Yeah, the climate piece is my driver, but it’s not all over the films at all. Partly because we wanted to communicate with farmers, and we know it makes sense – a farmer wants to listen to a farmer.
And so we wanted to make films that would highlight those conversations so that farmers could learn from farmers, but we also wanted these films to speak to a consumer and remind them to know where they’re getting food – go meet your farmer.
Deborah Clark of Birdwell and Clark Ranch in Henrietta, TX © 2020, carbon nation. Photo by Peter Byck
People are now spending so much time in their area now. Maybe they’ll understand meeting their farmers is a part of being in your local area and that farmers can produce food that they know is going to be eaten by the people in their local area, kind of like it was 60-70 years ago.
It’s like what Will Harris says in 100,000 Beating Hearts: He doesn’t have to feed the world; he just has to feed his community. This idea that every farm is supposed to be some big monolithic industrial complex because they have to feed the world – that’s a construct. That’s not a truth.
There are some farmers that are going to produce enough food so that we could export it to Canada and Japan and England and elsewhere… Great. That’s fantastic. But if every farmer really focused on feeding their community, the world would get fed. Something like 85% of farmers are smallholder farmers with an acre, or two acres, or half an acre. So the idea that you have to feed the world with any method that hurts our soils doesn’t make sense to me.
Alberta, Canada © 2020, carbon nation. Photo by Peter Byck
Farming to regenerate soils, farming so that next year the soils are in better shape than they were last year. That makes sense to me. To me, the scale is not the goal, but profit per acre – that would be a great metric for farmers. How much profit did you make per acre? Not how many bushels did you produce per acre? And when farmers do well, they feed us.
Well, since you bring that up, it’s interesting to think about it from the consumer side too. Do you think that this film is a good way of explaining to consumers that this is a way that they as an individual can help mitigate climate change by supporting our community soils?
Absolutely. There’s a lot of consumers who have stopped eating meat because they didn’t like the way they saw the larger meat industry going. But then when they find out how these animals are treated in all of our films by these farmers – there are a lot more regenerative farmers than what we filmed, obviously, and it’s growing – I’ve seen and heard of a lot of people who’ve come back to eating meat because they know where the meats being produced, and they can meet the farmer and they could see it’s a different situation.
So at the end of this farm is medicine (one of our paddocks), the farmer tells a story where these people come to his farm and they hadn’t eaten meat in years and years. But they looked at how he was treating the animals and how his operation looked and they bought some meat from him and he was surprised. So that’s the end of one of our films
But then a buddy of mine, who wrote the music for 100,000 Beating Hearts, was vegan, his wife’s vegan, and they are raising three incredibly cool kids that are all vegan. And so when I called him and said, ‘Hey, I want you to work on the music for this section of the film. Are you up for it? It’s about meat.’ He looked at a rough cut and goes, ‘Wow, these animals are really well treated. Of course, I’ll work on this.’ And then a couple of years after he did the music, he told me that he had started eating meat again. And it was because he’d met a farmer after the experience he had working on this film. And he saw a system that was working, that was making things better. And he was happy to participate in that.
I’ve got plenty of friends who don’t eat meat and I wouldn’t ever have suggested to my composer friend that he should eat meat – never in a million years. Everyone should eat what they want to eat. But I can say that if you’re going to be eating vegetables, your vegetable nutrient density will be a lot higher if they’re grown in soil that’s really, really rich with soil microbes and all the biodiversity of all the little critters in the soil that feed the plants and make sure the nutrients get to the plants.
And one of the quickest ways to get those soils healthy is adaptive grazing and so even if you don’t eat meat, you sure do want your row crop production combined with your animal production – in a very old fashioned way – to get those soils as healthy as possible because that makes healthy food. Makes sense?
Yes definitely! It’s interesting that as more people try to eat a diet with the planet in mind how often and how easy it is to forget the best way to do that is just to go find a farmer.
Yeah, and it’s the processed foods that will get you as far from a farmer as possible. I haven’t really seen a highly processed food that’s good for the planet, although some folks might say they are.
Yeah, maybe better in some cases than some of the alternatives, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. Perhaps it’s the lesser of two evils in some cases, and so it’s just an interesting way to look at it…
According to a buddy of mine, a scientist at Michigan State, if you add up the three major crops we grow the United States – corn, soy, hay – you put that on one side of a scale and then you put on the other side of the scale the soil we lose every year to erosion… the soil will weigh more. Our top export from our major farming industries in this country is soil, that can never be used again. That can’t last, and so there’s a lot of concern and worry about our soils becoming less and less robust, less full of carbon, less able to produce food… and then even the food that’s produced is less nutrient-dense.
This type of grazing is a phenomenal way to read rejuvenate and regenerate soils. It’s getting attention now – we’re seeing it. And there are people who have been working for decades on this. I’ve been working for seven or eight years on this from my perch. But things are changing. I really do think things are changing.

Chapter Sixteen- Sasha
The rain pounded against the roof of Nesta’s old home relentlessly, a few of the shingles threatening to fall off. It was a ruthless, cold rain storm- winter was coming, and fast. And by the looks of how the planks of the house trembled against the wind, Sasha knew that it wouldn’t last for the entirety of winter.
Nevertheless, Sasha had bought the house from Nesta under another alias, and would be staying here when training her and Estelle- none of them actually knew she was here. If they knew where she resided, then the Inner Circle did as well. So it was best that Sasha kept that information to herself.
She extended a rain soaked hand towards the house, watching some of the damage repair itself- a broken window, a hole in the roof. All minimal, to keep suspicion down. Already some of her neighbors have tried to pry information from her- they left with the threat that their house would mysteriously disappear if they didn’t leave her alone.
She brushed a strand of wet hair out of her face, inspected the house one last time before going inside. She would add more changes tomorrow, after training. They had continued practicing different weapons and styles of combat- Nesta was advancing wonderfully with the sword, and Estelle had shown promise with archery.
She smiled to herself. Aegan would’ve been proud, watching her friends progress. Sasha knew that the Illyrian was dying to train them herself- they would benefit greatly from her. However, Aegan was stuck in the mountains until the end of the month, and not even the strongest army could force her out. Not with Rhysand and Azriel keeping a sharp eye on her.
Sasha glanced around once more, before stepping inside the house, the thick wooden door slamming behind her. Instantly, the smell of must slammed into her- that needed to change, and fast. A flick of her wrist had the smell- and whatever it’s source was- disappear, leaving a not-as-nasty smell of sawdust. Was Nesta woodworking in here?
Collapsing onto the worn green sofa, she pulled out her throwing knives, a whetstone and a cloth to polish them. Aegan had gifted them to her years before being taken by Hybern- they were celebrating her 18th birthday, and while many female fae might’ve gotten new clothes or fancy jewelry, she had gotten knives. And to her, they were the best birthday present ever.
She poured some oil onto her cloth and started to clean the blades. It was a relaxing activity- all she needed was a glass of wine and she would truly feel at ease. Her own passive face started back at her as she wiped the knives clean of blood and grime, the steel glinting in the candle light.
Her mind naturally began to wander, as she set one knife down and picked up another. Of course, Aegan’s well being was the main subject. The way she looked yesterday was horrifying- never in her life had she seen the Illyrian cry for mercy. The power that Sasha had taken from her, that now resided deep within her own chest, was nothing she had ever seen before. For her friend, it was eating her alive, but for her…. It stirred a little from day to day, but otherwise was quiet. As if it were waiting for something.
She prodded that power once again, for the millionth time today. Again, nothing extraordinary happened. It was almost disappointing- usually, she was able to use the power that she took from others. Maybe it was a blessing from above that she couldn’t use Aegan’s.
Nesta’s power was another thing to be curious about. Sasha was amazed- and slightly terrified- when she felt that raw, gruesome power in the female’s body that day. How she managed to get gifted by the cauldron was beyond her, but the only thing she wanted to know was what Nesta could do with it. She had tried asking her today, but she dodged it effortlessly. Even though Sasha could just take that power from her and try it out herself, she wouldn’t be able to give it back to her- yet, at least. She had been using almost all of her free time to practice the transferring of powers to individuals, leaving her too exhausted to function on most days. For now, she merely trapped them in Hybern Crystal- like quartz, it was a milky white, but when introduced to a well of power, it would change color.
A few crystals laid next to her on the small coffee table. A good number of her crystals were filled with the powers of the Illyrians unlucky enough to suffer her wrath during Aegan’s disappearance. Many others were filled with the powers of Fae all across Hybern and Prythian. It was like a souvenir from her travels- an icy blue one was from some Winter Court buffoon, an orange one from a Day Court gentleman.
Her favorite one was a red crystal, hidden beneath a pile of clothes. It gifted her amazing pyrokinesis abilities- fire had always been her favorite ability. She loved the way it could burn and destroy everything she despised, while also being a source of warmth and light. However, she had not used it in awhile, as she hadn’t needed to burn down anything- yet.
A loud knock at the door caused her to jump. “Who could that be?” She muttered to herself, keeping one of her blades close by her side as she crept towards the door. Nesta and Estelle didn’t know she lived here, and most of her neighbors knew to leave her alone. ‘Could it be the inner circle?’ She thought to herself, suspicion swishing around in her gut.
“Hello?” A voice called out from behind the door. “Nes, are you home?”
It was Cassian, clearly here to bother poor Nesta. Why he wasn’t in the Illyrian Mountains, doing his job, was unbeknownst to her. But he was interrupting her one relaxing activity of the day- he had to go.
“You have the wrong address” she called out, not bothering to open the door. “There is no ‘Nes’ here anymore.”
She heard him scoff. “And who is this?”
Sasha rolled her eyes, swinging open the door. “Me, you damn idiot. Are you always this annoying?” She asked, enjoying the way his face paled dramatically. Clearly, he wasn’t suspecting to see the girl he locked up to be standing in Nesta’s old home.
He cleared his throat, in an attempt to compose himself slightly. “My apologies, Miss…”
“Kore.”
Cassian grinned. “Okay, Ms. Kore. Do you know where Nesta is?”
Sasha crossed her arms, not returning his smile. “Why should I tell you anything?” She snapped. “Mother above, you locked me up in the Prison for 300 years.”
“You were sending innocent Illyrians to their graves, Sasha. I had no choice but to go after you.”
She felt her power rile up within her, that red crystal silently beckoning her to burn this prick to the ground. “Your ‘innocent Illyrians’ had raped and slaughtered Aegan’s mother, and had harassed her and Aegan for years. They were the ones who brought Hybern to those mountains to take Aegan away from me” she seethed, her hand gripping the doorframe roughly.
Cassian’s smile dropped. “You don’t know that” he told her all too softly.
“Don’t I?” She smiled sickly, before slamming the door in his face, going back to the green sofa. She knew he still stood in the doorway, probably contemplating whether to let himself in. If he did…. She had three knives freshly polished and sharpened at her side. She would hate it if she had to use them just after cleaning them.
Eventually, she heard his heavy footsteps march down the wooden steps, growing quieter as he walked away.
Sasha released a sigh she didn’t know she was holding. Grabbing another knife, she went back to sharpening, gripping the whetstone tightly. She did not regret killing those Ironcrest males all those years ago. And if they dared to come after any of her friends, especially Estelle or Nesta…. There would be no hesitation- Sasha would broil them alive. And let Aegan rip them apart.

Yesterday’s rain had caused the forest floor to be a pit of mud and loose debris, proving to be quite the obstacle for Sasha and Nesta as they raced through the trees. Estelle had injured her knee the other day- she was forced to stay home to heal. Although Sasha hoped that the Illyrian healed soon, she was thankful for this time alone with Nesta. Perhaps they would finally discuss her gifts- a task already proven to be difficult.
“How’s Estelle?” Sasha asked, as she leapt over a fallen tree. She hadn’t been able to swing by to check on her, and she couldn’t just ask the inner circle if she was feeling better. In fact, the three of them had agreed to keep Estelle’s injury a secret, to avoid any unwanted questions.
Nesta shrugged. “She said she would try doing some easy exercise later, once the Inner Circle was out doing their own thing,” she told her, going around a large rock. “I told her to be careful- her knee was swelling last night.”
She frowned. How Estelle had managed to injure herself was still a mystery to her- one second, she was on her feet, the next, on the ground, gripping her knee like there was no tomorrow. “I’ll send her more salve tonight- she needs to apply it an hour before going to bed.”
Nesta nodded. “So, what are we doing today, if Estelle’s not here?” She asked, slowing down as they reached their clearing.
Sasha merely sat on a boulder. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you” she began to say, sending her a look.
Shaking her head, Nesta began to back up. “No, we are not talking about that-”
“Nesta.” Sasha met her friend’s fiery gaze. “You might not like your gift, but it’ll protect you well.”
Her face twisted slightly. “I haven’t been able to summon that power ever since the war against Hybern. I doubt I’ll be able to summon it ever again” she told her, balling her fists at her side. As if she was expecting some sort of fight.
Sasha pursed her lips. It would be no use for her to try to get Nesta to learn how to wield her power if she was unwilling. Even with the threat of Ironcrest loaming dangerously over the horizon… It was best for both of them to focus on one thing at a time, and not try anything new.
Still, her curiosity got the best of her. “May I at least see it? You would’ve have to do anything” Sasha asked, her power already reaching out towards the hidden well of destruction deep in her friend. “After that, I promise to leave you alone about it.”
She looked hesitant. “Fine,” Nesta finally blurted out. “Just don’t try to use it in any way, okay?”
Sasha would have responded, but she had instantly latched to that dark power, awed at the way it hummed and burned her all the same. It was like fire, but deadlier. This was a weapon that could level any army. The Cauldron had gifted her in an… interesting way. If only she could explore it further…
Sasha pulled away before things got out of hand. It pained her so- so much power thundered there- but she did promise not to use it for herself. Maybe some other time, then.
“Well?” Nesta called out, knocking Sasha out of her daze. “What did you find?”
She felt a grin plaster itself on her face. “A weapon stronger than anything I’ve ever seen. And trust me, I’ve seen just about every blade and magic in Prythian.”
Nesta let out a shudder. “It’s probably a good thing that I can’t use it- I might accidentally hurt you or Estelle.”
Sasha sent her a pointed look. “Which is why you need to learn how to control it. I can teach you just as easily as I do Estelle with her blades. If you want help, don’t be afraid to ask” she told her, turning around briefly to slip off the boulder. She then walked over to the hollowed out tree, where the dulled swords were stored. “So, do you want spar for a couple minutes, before practicing with the bow?”
She was met with silence. Sasha turned around, arching an eyebrow. “Well?”
Nesta hadn’t moved from her spot. “I’ll do it,” she whispered, her eyes not leaving the ground.
“Okay, come grab your sword-”
“No”, she interrupted. “I’ll learn how to use my ‘gift’, if that’ll make you feel any better.”
“I just want you to feel confident with magic, Nesta” Sasha told her, her face softening as she saw the despair in her friend’s eyes. “Think of it as a second suit of armor- even if you only have only a basic understanding of it, it’ll still be hard for most to harm you with that sort of power on your side.”
Nesta’s eyes lifted. “I guess you have a point. But I don’t even know how to summon it in the first place.”
Sasha tapped her finger on her chin. “Well, it usually takes something to trigger your powers,” she began to say, setting the practice swords back into the tree. “Emotions can cause your magic to flare up- the stronger the emotion, the more reactive your powers get.”
She then twirled a throwing knife in her hand. “Anger and fear might be the easiest to summon, wouldn’t you agree?” Sasha asked, before hurtling the knife straight at Nesta’s head.
~Nesta’s POV~
It took all of her training to avoid that blade, which had embedded itself in the tree behind her and not her head, thankfully. Still, it kicked her nerves into overdrive, as she watched Sasha pull out two more knives.
“What are you doing?” She hissed, before diving sideways, the knives whistling just past her ear.
Sasha merely grinned. “Getting a rile out of you, of course. I’m also testing your reflexes- if you can’t dodge these throws, then I’m doing a terrible job training you.”
Nesta growled, before grabbing one of the blades thrown at her. Hurling it at Sasha, she had hoped it would at least distract the redhead long enough for her to tackle her to the ground. Of course, it didn’t work- the knife sailed a foot above Sasha’s head, before disappearing into the woods beyond.
Frustration burned deep within her, Nesta feeling something white hot course through her veins. Sasha must’ve been looking for any sign of her powers, desperate for at least a flicker-
There. A small crackle of lightning. A tiny ember glowing in her chest. Nesta hastily grabbed at it, and poured all of her frustrations and anger into it, watching it grow and grow before her eyes. It wasn’t like how she was during the war, but it was a start.
“Release, Nesta!” She heard Sasha tell her- the redhead was back on that rock, a knife in each hand. “Fire it all at me!”
Any concern for her friend’s well-being was quickly washed away in a maelstrom of fire and lightning. Raising her hand, she unleashed that power straight at the stone.
And watched the boulder crumble to dust.
